Indiana University School of Medicine Plans Pediatric Translational Research Facility

Indiana University School of Medicine is initiating a renovation at Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis to house pediatric translational research. The 18,500-sf facility will provide laboratories, bio-storage, a videoconferencing suite, and office space. Completion is expected in late 2012. The renovation is supported by nearly $8.4 million in federal stimulus funding.

Hartford Hospital Builds Biomedical Research Facilities

Hartford Hospital was awarded $3.2 million in federal stimulus funding in early 2010 to construct two additions to the Olin Neuropsychiatry Research Center in Hartford, Conn. The two-story, 6,700-sf facility Research Staff Addition will be built as an expansion of the Huntington Building. A new MRI instrument will be located in the 1,800-sf ONRC Magnet addition.

University of Cincinnati Renovates Kettering Laboratory

The University of Cincinnati is planning a renovation of 8,910 sf in Kettering Laboratory to house environmental health research. Supported by $4.8 million in federal stimulus funding, the project will also include conversion of an existing 4,355 gsf atrium to create interdisciplinary research space. Designed to optimize energy performance and efficiency, the completed facility will house the transdisciplinary Center for Epigenetic Epidemiology.

Ohio State University Renovates Biomedical Research Facilities

Ohio State University is planning two research facility renovation projects in Columbus. Both projects are supported by federal stimulus funding and are slated for completion in 2014. An award of $8 million will support the buildout of 24,000 asf in the Biomedical Research Tower to accommodate the Experimental Therapeutics Program of The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Case Western Reserve University Renovates Cleveland Clinic Labs

Case Western Reserve University is initiating a $2 million laboratory renovation for the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine. Supporting cancer research, the 3,600-sf project will provide space for four additional investigators and a shared instrumentation core. The renovation is funded by an award from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. Completion is expected in May of 2011.

Emory University Partners with Children's Healthcare of Atlanta to Build Health Sciences Research Building

Emory University is partnering with Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta to construct the $90 million Health Sciences Research Building in Atlanta. The planned 190,000-sf facility will support translational research, including pediatric research, cancer research, and drug discovery. The building program will include modern wet and dry laboratories, a BSL-3 laboratory, an auditorium, support spaces, and formal and informal collaboration spaces. A minimum of LEED Silver sustainable design certification will be sought for the facility.

Translational Research Institute Plans Brisbane Facility

The Translational Research Institute (TRI) selected Watpac Construction in May of 2010 to construct its $354 million research facility in Brisbane. Located at Princess Alexandra Hospital, the TRI will house integrated facilities for the discovery, production, clinical testing, and manufacture of new biopharmaceuticals and therapies. Occupancy is expected in mid-2012.

University of California San Diego Designs Clinical and Translational Research Institute

The University of California San Diego has selected ZGF Architects to program and design the 286,500-sf Clinical and Translational Research Institute. Located on the university’s East Campus, the facility will include both wet and dry research space, core facilities, exam and interview rooms for clinical trials, staff and faculty offices, and other specialty spaces. A minimum of LEED Silver sustainable design certification will be sought for the project.

University of Florida Dedicates Biomedical Sciences Building

The University of Florida dedicated the $90.5 million Biomedical Sciences Building in Gainesville in May of 2010. Supporting translational research, the eight-story, 163,000-sf multidisciplinary facility houses the Health Science Center Colleges, the Biomedical Engineering Department of the College of Engineering, and Animal Care Services. The project team included HuntonBrady Architects as architect of record, Ellenzweig as design architect, and Whiting-Turner Contracting Company as general contractor.

Nationwide Children's Hospital Breaks Ground on Research Building III

Nationwide Children’s Hospital broke ground on the $93 million Research Building III in May of 2010. Located in Columbus, Ohio, the 225,000-sf facility will house the Battelle Center for Mathematical Medicine, the Center for Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Research, and the Center for Perinatal Research. Turner Construction is utilizing BIM (Building Information Modeling) to construct the facility. LEED sustainable design certification will be sought for the project. Completion is expected in 2012.

Providing connections to the three UB campuses and state industry partners, the access grid facility will support collaborative research and technology transfer will real-time teleconferencing. The project is supported by $250,000 in funding from National Grid.

Designed by HOK, the facility will house laboratory space for genome sequencing and bar coding. Los Angeles Biomedical Research Institute will construct the Chronic Disease Clinical Research Center in Torrance, Calif. Supported by nearly $10 million in federal stimulus funding, the two-story, 23,171-sf facility will house the Center for Rehabilitative Medicine, the Center for Atherosclerosis Research, and the Investigational Drug Service. The building will also include clinical research space. Construction will begin in August of 2011 with completion expected in fall of 2013.

Sanford Consortium for Regenerative Medicine Breaks Ground on Stem Cell Facility

Sanford Consortium for Regenerative Medicine officially broke ground on its $126 million stem cell research facility in San Diego on March 26, 2010. The 145,000-sf center is expected to open in September of 2011. The four-story facility will provide collaborative research laboratories for Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute, Salk Institute for Biological Studies, The Scripps Research Institute, and U.C. San Diego.
