The 183,500-sf Jackson Laboratory (JAX) for Genomic Medicine aims to advance genomic research not only by way of its location—on the campus of a university health center near major research institutions, hospitals, and urban research corridors—but also by utilizing an interior design that comingles the computational and wet lab aspects of research and encourages collaboration. The ultimate goal is to enable quicker development of disease-fighting therapies targeted at individual patients. 

The J. Craig Venter Institute completed construction in February of 2014 on its new $35 million genomic research facility in La Jolla, Calif. Designed by ZGF Architects to accommodate 125 scientists and staff, the 45,000-sf building includes a single-story, 12,605-sf lab wing and a three-story, 28,600-sf office wing.

The University of Michigan is planning to build the $261 million Biological Science Building in Ann Arbor. Designed by SmithGroup JJR, the 300,000-sf facility will provide research labs, classrooms, offices, and a vivarium for the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology and the Department of Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology. Providing open, flexible laboratories for collaborative research, the building will be constructed adjacent to the existing Life Sciences Institute to which it will physically connect.

Nova Southeastern University broke ground in February of 2014 on the 215,000-sf Center for Collaborative Research (CCR) in Davie, Fla. The $80 million multidisciplinary facility will house wet labs, an IBM supercomputer research suite, the Institute for Neuro-Immune Medicine, the Rumbaugh-Goodwin Institute for Cancer Research, and the Emil Buehler Research Center for Engineering, Science, and Mathematics. The building will also accommodate the General Clinical Research Center, the NSU Technology Incubator, and space for the United States Geological Survey.

The Peter Gilgan Centre for Research and Learning at The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) in Toronto is the largest high-rise pediatric health research facility in Canada, challenging designers to create a collaborative research environment in a 21-story tower. Completed in September 2013, the $400 million CDN ($376 million USD) research tower brings together in one central location about 240 principal investigators and 2,000 trainees and staff, formerly spread out in six Toronto locations.

All Children's Hospital is partnering with the University of South Florida to create a 300,000-sf pediatric research facility in St. Petersburg. Housing 40 investigators, the project will support medical education, training, and joint research in areas including neuroscience, behavioral health, and early childhood diseases. The estimated construction cost of the facility is $75 million.

Emory University’s 200,000-sf Health Sciences Research Building (HSRB) provides both wet and dry labs and BSL-2 and BSL-3 containment to pursue research in drug discovery, immunology and vaccines, neurosciences, cancer, gastroenterology, transplant immunology, nephrology, biomedical engineering, and human genetics.

The University of South Florida broke ground on the $50 million USF Health Heart Institute in Tampa in December of 2013. The five-story, 100,000-sf facility will feature four core laboratories for basic and applied research, including regenerative medicine; pharmacology and drug discovery; bioinformatics and genomics; and integrative cell and organ physiology. The interdisciplinary project is created in partnership with Florida Hospital Pepin Heart Institute and is slated for completion in 2015.

Monash Health has selected Lend Lease Building as the construction manager for the 134,550-sf Monash Translational Research Facility in Melbourne, Australia. Created in partnership with Monash University, Monash Institute of Medical Research, and Prince Henry’s Institute, the $76 million project will accommodate research on cancer, neurology, inflammatory and infectious diseases, and endocrinology and metabolism. Construction will begin in 2014 with completion expected in late 2015.

A comprehensive renovation of Harvard University’s 105,000-sf Sherman Fairchild Building for the Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine Department has allowed researchers to work more efficiently and collaboratively than ever before, with shared fume hoods and environmental, imaging, and equipment rooms. High-use support spaces, such as tissue culture rooms, were moved to the building exterior to take advantage of natural light, while the other shared spaces were moved to the interior.

Tata Memorial Centre has opened a cryogenic mouse embryo storage bank in Mumbai. Located at the Advanced Centre for Treatment, Research and Education in Cancer (ACTREC), the facility will preserve valuable genetic strains of laboratory rodents to support biomedical research by the Laboratory Animal Facility (LAF). Cryopreservation enables the storage of biological material at extremely low temperatures for long periods of time. The LAF maintains 22 different strains of mice as well as two strains of hamsters, one strain of rats, and one rabbit strain.

Washington State University dedicated the $78.6 million Pharmaceutical & Biomedical Sciences Building in December of 2013. Designed by NBBJ to foster interaction and collaboration, the 125,000-gsf facility provides open research and teaching labs, flexible classrooms, a 150-seat auditorium, and administrative and faculty offices. Located on the Riverpoint campus in Spokane, the building houses the College of Pharmacy and Medical Sciences and represents the first phase of a planned research complex.

Stony Brook University broke ground on the $194 million Medical and Research Translation (MART) building in November of 2013. The eight-story, 250,000-sf facility will accommodate up to 250 faculty members working in collaboration with physicians and medical professionals to develop advanced cancer treatments and medical imaging technologies. MART will provide 25 cancer biology labs, a 30-room cancer clinic, a 30-station clinical infusion center, a 300-seat auditorium, 12 classrooms, and conference rooms.

Huntsman Cancer Institute is planning to build the $100 million Primary Children’s and Families’ Research Center on the campus of its Salt Lake City headquarters. Accommodating 300 investigators, the 220,000-sf facility will provide advanced facilities for the study of genetic cancers. Construction is expected to begin in spring of 2014.
