Children’s National Health System Breaks Ground on Research and Innovation Campus

Children's National Health System broke ground in late November of 2018 on the Research and Innovation Campus in Washington. The project includes the renovation of four existing buildings located on 12 acres on the former Walter Reed Medical Center Campus. A 333,000-sf research and innovation facility will provide 158,000 sf of laboratory space for the study of pediatric genomics and precision medicine. The project will include a business incubator and 175,000 of shell space to accommodate future growth. Completion is expected in 2020.

Located in the Norwich Research Park in the United Kingdom, the 150,000-sf complex was created by Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital, the University of East Anglia, Quadram Institute Bioscience, and the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council.

Designed by The Collaborative, the 52,000-sf facility provides a 3,000-sf simulation training lab, classrooms, collaborative learning spaces, faculty offices, a multipurpose room, a gymnasium, an indoor track, and a fitness center.

Children's Hospital of Pennsylvania Completes Clinical Vector Core

Children's Hospital of Philadelphia completed construction of the $75 million Clinical Vector Core in November of 2018. Located on the basement level of the Colket Translational Research Building, the project provides laboratories, offices, four production suites, and cleanrooms for the manufacture of gene therapy agents for clinical trials. Grand Valley State University Breaks Ground on DeVos Center for Interprofessional Health

Grand Valley State University broke ground in November of 2018 on the $70 million Daniel and Pamella DeVos Center for Interprofessional Health in Grand Rapids, Mich. Designed by FTCH, the five-story, 160,000-sf facility will provide 15 classrooms and seminar rooms, 14 interactive labs, 12 conference rooms, 22 study areas, over 80 offices, and a library. The collaborative building will feature a learning commons, advanced simulation training suites, and a virtual anatomy lab with 3D modeling and imaging capabilities.

Stony Brook University Opens Medical and Research Translation Facility and Hospital Pavilion

Stony Brook University and Stony Brook Medicine opened a $423 million medical research and treatment complex in November of 2018 in Stony Brook, N.Y. The 475,000-sf project included construction of the $193 million Medical and Research Translation (MART) building, an eight-story, 250,000-sf facility providing wet labs for the study of cancer biology, dry labs for biomedical informatics and statistical research, and a conference center with a 300-seat auditorium.

Hospital Corporation of America Breaks Ground on UCF Lake Nona Medical Center

Hospital Corporation of America broke ground in October of 2018 on the $175 million UCF Lake Nona Medical Center in Orlando. Created in partnership with the University of Central Florida, the three-story, 204,000-sf teaching hospital will be built on 25 acres owned by the university in the Lake Nona Medical City development. The project is sited adjacent to the UCF College of Medicine and will act as the cornerstone for the school's new Academic Health Sciences Center. Occupancy is expected in late 2020.

Emory University Plans Biomedical Research Facility

Emory University will begin construction in fall of 2019 on a $260 million biomedical research facility in Atlanta. Designed by HOK, the 300,000-sf facility will provide labs and offices for researchers engaged in the study of immunology, neurology, oncology, cardiology, and biomedical imaging. The project represents an expansion of the Woodruff Health Sciences Center and may include an animal research vivarium and a cage wash. Occupancy is expected in December of 2021.

University of Maryland School of Medicine Opens Health Sciences Facility III

The University of Maryland School of Medicine opened the $305 million Health Sciences Facility III in Baltimore in October of 2018. Designed by HOK and Design Collective, the 11-story, 435,000-sf building provides wet and dry labs for biomedical research, an imaging suite, offices, collaboration spaces, and conference and seminar rooms. Accommodating 400 faculty and staff members, the facility houses over 15 research teams engaged in the study of oncology, cardiology, neurology, genomics, and regenerative medicine.

Founded at the intersection of health science and education, the Henderson County Health Sciences Center is building bridges between patients, students, and healthcare professionals. The three-story facility provides an enhanced experience for patients through a complex network of professionals working together. The facility is the result of a strategic partnership between Pardee Hospital, Blue Ridge Community College, Wingate University, and Henderson County. Henderson County coordinated and funded the project through a public-private partnership that expands space, funds, and resources for the three entities and the surrounding community.

Designed by Page Southerland Page and The S/L/A/M Collaborative, the project will be located on seven acres in Grand Central Park, a 2,000-acre mixed-use campus created by Johnson Development Corp.

University of Kentucky Opens Health Research Facility

The University of Kentucky opened the first phase of its $265 million health research facility in September of 2018. Located in Lexington, the six-story, 300,000-sf building accommodates the study of health disparities in conditions including cancer, diabetes, obesity, and substance abuse. Designed by HGA Architects and Engineers, the multidisciplinary research facility features open labs with collocated computational and wet bench space. The first phase of construction included completion of the first three floors and parts of the basement level.

Mayo Clinic Plans Phoenix Expansion

Mayo Clinic is planning a $648 million expansion of its Phoenix medical facilities. The Arizona Forward Project will add 1.4 million square feet to the existing 1.7 million-sf campus, increasing the number of inpatient beds from 280 to 374. A six-story patient tower will be constructed offering an outpatient surgery center, clinical offices, inpatient rooms, and rehabilitation space. The emergency department will be housed in a new three-story structure that will also accommodate laboratory medicine, radiology, and pharmacy.

The University of Texas at Arlington opened the $125 million Science & Engineering Innovation & Research Building (SEIR) in September of 2018. Designed by ZGF Architects and Page Southerland Page to accommodate interdisciplinary biomedical research, the six-story, 229,000-sf facility includes a two-story classroom wing, a four-story research wing, and a basement laboratory level with vibration-mitigated instrumentation suites.
