San Diego State University Constructs STEM Building

San Diego State University began work in early 2025 on a new STEM facility to enhance student success and increase research access and productivity. SmithGroup designed this iconic campus destination to advance innovation and discovery while addressing growing industry demand for science graduates. Spanning 79,000 gsf, the five-story center will provide approximately 38,000 asf of space for instructional and research laboratories, including both wet and dry environments, as well as related support spaces and faculty offices.

Wisconsin Department of Justice Builds Forensic Sciences Lab

The Wisconsin Department of Justice (DOJ) is creating a new $115.5 million facility for the Milwaukee Crime Lab in partnership with the Medical College of Wisconsin to drive discovery, innovation, and education in the forensic sciences. Replacing the existing complex, the 73,188-gsf project will include 64,802 gsf of shared space that will also accommodate operations for the Division of Forensic Sciences. The center will also offer training spaces, offices, and a parking garage.

San Francisco State University Dedicates Science & Engineering Innovation Center

San Francisco State University celebrated the dedication of the Science and Engineering Innovation Center (SEIC) in January of 2025. Delivered by the design-build team of SmithGroup and DPR Construction, the $169 million facility provides advanced laboratories and leading-edge classrooms for the school's STEM education programs. As the new home for the College of Science & Engineering (CoSE), the 125,000-sf building houses the Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry, the School of Engineering, and the dean’s office.

Virginia Tech Opens First Phase of Innovation Campus

Virginia Tech opened the first building on its Innovation Campus in Alexandria in January of 2025. SmithGroup designed the 300,000-gsf facility to provide leading-edge environments for academic and research programs in computer science and engineering, as well as space for the Pamplin College of Business. Featuring specialized laboratories, a drone testing cage, and a two-story maker space, the 11-story development houses 14 classrooms, wellness venues for students and faculty, and the 3,000-sf Boeing Auditorium.

University of Arizona Breaks Ground on Center for Advanced Molecular and Immunological Therapies

University of Arizona Health Sciences broke ground in late October of 2024 on the Center for Advanced Molecular and Immunological Therapies (CAMI). Delivered by the design-build team of SmithGroup and McCarthy Building Companies, the transformational project will serve as a physical and metaphorical gateway to the Downtown Phoenix district and the Phoenix Bioscience Core.
