Alexandria Center for Life Science Opens in New York

Alexandria Real Estate Equities completed the first phase of the Alexandria Center for Life Science in December of 2010. Located in New York City, the life science park is designed as an international hub for scientific, entrepreneurial, and commercial collaboration. The 15-story, 310,000-sf Alexandria Center will house tenants including Eli Lilly & Company, ImClone Systems, Kadmon Pharmaceuticals, and Firmenich.

University of Nebraska Medical Center Breaks Ground on Eye Institute

The University of Nebraska Medical Center broke ground on the $30 million Truhlsen Eye Institute in Omaha in December of 2010. Housing research and clinical space for the department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, the 47,000-sf facility will feature a diagnostic imaging center and specialty clinics. Completion is expected in 2012. A planned second phase of construction will provide surgical suites.

Construction Continues on Singapore University of Technology and Design

The $700 million Singapore University of Technology and Design is slated for completion in 2013. Developed in partnership with Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the school will provide interdisciplinary education in engineering, architecture, and information systems and will support the development of new teaching paradigms. Ground was broken on the project in July of 2010.

Kemwell Partners with Boehringer Ingelheim on Biopharmaceutical Manufacturing Facility

Kemwell is partnering with Boehringer Ingelheim to construct a biopharmaceutical manufacturing plant in Bangalore, India. Ground was broken on the 15,000-sm greenfield facility in December of 2010. The cGMP plant will support process development, fermentation, purification, and formulation of biologics for early-phase preclinical and clinical studies. The project includes a fill and finish facility and suites for microbial fermentation and the production of protein therapeutics from mammalian cell cultures.

Duke University Opens Expanded Lemur Center

Duke University opened two new facilities at the Duke Lemur Center in December of 2010. The $10.4 million project was designed by Lord, Aeck & Sargent and is located in Durham, N.C. The Releasable Building provides dry lab space and housing for 60 lemurs in a free range environment sited on 69 forested acres. The Semi-Releasable Building includes a wet lab for biological and chemical analysis and houses 80 lemurs with limited outdoor access.
