American Red Cross Breaks Ground on Washington Headquarters
The American Red Cross has broken ground on a new 750,000-sf national headquarters facility. The Red Cross Chapter House, an historic 85,000-sf structure, will be part of the new design by D.C.-based Shalom Baranes Associates, along with a 10-story office tower. The Clark Construction Group will build the new facility, which is scheduled for completion in spring 2002.
Howard Hughes Medical Institute Plans Biomedical R&D Complex
The Howard Hughes Medical Institute has plans for a $500-million biomedical R&D complex at Janelia Farm in Ashburn. Bioinformatics, biomedical imaging, and gene protein research will be conducted at the facility, which will accommodate more than 300 scientists and support staff. Dormitories will provide accommodations for visiting researchers. Construction at the 281-acre site is scheduled to begin in 2003; completion is scheduled for late 2005.
Xanthon Plans RTP Laboratory
Xanthon Inc. has proposed building a new 80,000-sf facility in the Research Triangle Park area. The company currently occupies approximately 24,000 sf in three buildings in the Park Research Center there. The structure will house a state-of-the-art-lab for R&D, Class 100 and 10,000 cleanroom manufacturing suites, engineering labs, and administrative office space.
Wittenberg University Designs New Science Center
Wittenberg University has selected Holabird & Root of Chicago to design the Barbara Deer Kuss Science Center and renovate the existing building. The first phase of a two phase project includes a 47,000-sf expansion of the original 96,000-sf facility to primarily house classroom, laboratory, and office space with state-of-the-art mechanical and electrical systems. The facility will house the disciplines of Biology, Biochemistry, Computer Science, Chemistry, Environmental Studies, Geology, Health Professions, Marine and Molecular Biology, Mathematics, and Physics.
Hartsfield Builds Airport Technical Support Campus
Hartsfield Atlanta International Airport is building a new $4.4-million Airport Technical Support Campus facility. The 55,000-sf office will house 250 employees and will accommodate personnel (project management teams, contractors, subcontractors) involved in construction projects for the airport such as the planned fifth runway. The single story structure can be expanded to 94,000-sf. Completion is anticipated in July 2001.
