The University of Washington broke ground on a new $80-million law school building—the William H. Gates Hall—in May 2001. Construction of the 196,000-sf four-story building will begin in September 2001 and is slated for completion in summer of 2003. The facility will include a 10,000-sf reading room with stacks occupying approximately 40,000 sf. The building will also feature a 170-person classroom equipped as a trial court, law clinics, seminar rooms, additional instructional areas, as well as offices for staff, faculty, and graduate students.

The U.S. Army has granted $2.5 million to an Emory University scientist to for a new prostate cancer research center. Funded by the U.S. Army Medical Research and Material Command's Prostate Cancer Research Program (PCRP), the new facility will study the causes and behavior of prostate cancer in the body.

The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio is developing the new Sam and Ann Barshop Center for Longevity and Aging Studies. The Barshops donated $4 million to the Texas Research Park facility, which will provide laboratory space for scientists.

Radiant Photonics (formerly Radiant Research) has opened its new 35,000-sf headquarters in Northeast Austin. The fiber optics components manufacturer's new site includes facilities for pilot manufacturing and a cleanroom.

Verisign is considering 600,00-sf of new office space in the 1.5 million-sf Dulles Station project in Herndon. The California-based Internet service company will be consolidating its four Herndon offices and 1,000 employees in the new space. Verisign may obtain between 500,000-sf and 700,000-sf of the Dulles Station complex developed by Crimson Partners. Groundbreaking on the first 176,000-sf building is scheduled for April, with construction completed in one year.
