Navy Marine Corps. Operation Center Nears Completion
Navy Marine Corps.' Intranet network operations center at North Island Naval Air Station in San Diego is nearing completion. A total of six such centers are planned for the network, with a second one to be built in Hawaii. The center project, which will link all Navy and Marine land facilities in the continental U.S., is headed by a consortium of private companies called the Information Strike Force, lead by Electronic Data Services Corp. of Plano, Texas.
XO Considers Consolidation in Richardson
XO Communications Inc. is considering the construction of a 300,000-sf building at a 40-acre site in Richardson to consolidate its 1,500 Dallas-area employees. The project would include a large regional training center as well as an 80,000-sf data center to accommodate Web hosting, server management, collocation, and related services. XO is working with The Staubach Co. on the potential consolidation.
BAE Systems Mission Solutions Builds in Rancho Bernardo
BAE Systems Mission Solutions has purchased 11.5 acres in Rancho Bernardo where it will add a 210,000-sf multistory building and parking garage to the existing structure at the site. The high tech defense contractor is a unit of BAE Systems North America, based in Rockville, Md., and employs approximately 1400 people in San Diego. Groundbreaking for the new structures is planned for June 2001, with completion of construction by mid-2002.
Overland Data Builds New San Diego Facility
Overland Data Inc. broke ground in March 2001 at the San Diego Spectrum development for a new 158,000-sf building to accommodate production, engineering, operations, marketing and sales for the company. Completion is anticipated in spring 2002. Overland Data manufactures automated tape backup equipment for computer systems.
Pacific Bell Opens Irvine Data Center
Pacific Bell, a subsidiary of Texas-based SBC, has opened a new $50 million, 135,000-sf data center in Irvine. The facility is designed to provide data services, such as Web hosting, collocation, IT infrastructure protection, and improved systems reliability to businesses who want to outsource those functions. SBC established a data center in Dallas recently, and is considering sites in northern California for a similar facility.
