Strategic Data Services Develops Missile Silo Data Center
Roswell, N.M.-based Strategic Data Systems is developing a facility capable of hosting 1 million gigabytes of data in in two former Atlas F nuclear missile silos. Comprising 1.2 million sf, the 22-floor facility will have 100 servers on each floor. The massive computer storage system will be protected by a structure built to withstand most natural and manmade disasters, and features four-foot-thick concrete walls, 4,000-pound steel doors, and a diesel-powered backup generator. The silos will employ sixty workers once operational.
FDIC Expands Arlington Offices
The Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. (FDIC) will expand its main office in Arlington's Virginia Square, adding 415,472 sf to its 370,000-sf campus. The $75-million development will accommodate an additional 1,100 employees. Comprised of two nine-story towers with ground-floor retail, the project is slated for completion in 2006. The FDIC will vacate leased offices in the district but will maintain its headquarters office across from the Old Executive Office Building.
Entegris Expands Manufacturing Operations in Germany
Entegris Inc., a Chaska-based manufacturer of products to protect semiconductors during shipment, has expanded manufacturing capabilities at its Bad Rapaneau, Germany facility to make both 150 mm and 200 mm Ultrapak wafer carriers.
AMD-Fujitsu Plans Sunnyvale Chip Manufacturing Plant
FASL LLC, a company merging the flash memory operations of Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) and Fujitsu, is planning to build a chipmaking plant in Sunnyvale, Calif. AMD's Fab 25 plant in Austin, which manufactures only flash memory chips, will also become part of FASL.
ZymoGenetics Breaks Ground on Seattle Addition
Biotech company ZymoGenetics broke ground in early April 2003 on a 70,000-sf addition to its Seattle complex, bringing the company's presence up to 228,000sf. Designed by MBT Architecture, the $26-million project is designed for future growth and will house laboratories and offices. The four-story facility is slated for completion in May 2004 and is being built by Turner Construction.
