University of Washington Renovates Johnson Hall

The University of Washington has awarded Skanska USA Building the pre-construction services assignment for the Johnson Hall renovation in Seattle. The pre-construction phase will begin in the third quarter of 2003. If the project enters the construction phase, which is expected in January 2004, the anticipated construction value for the project would be approximately $35-million. Skanska’s Seattle office will oversee the project, which includes seismic upgrades and renovation/restoration of the 121,000-sf five-story 1930’s historic structure.

Maria Parham Hospital Expands in Henderson

Maria Parham Hospital will begin construction on a five-story, 131,000-sf tower in summer of 2003. The $52.8-million expansion project is the largest in the hospital’s 78-year history. Replacing much of the existing hospital, the tower will house a new emergency department, imaging and radiology, intensive care, a women’s center, a neonatal unit, a surgical patient unit, and five operating rooms. Renovations to 46,600 sf of the existing hospital will create a 25-bed unit adjoining the surgical patient unit on the new tower’s fourth floor.

Bureau of Indian Affairs Occupies Herndon Facility

The Department of the Interior Bureau of Indian Affairs has leased the 60,767-sf Corporate Oaks One facility in Herndon, Va., from NVCommercial.  The two-story office building, previously occupied by VeriSign, was built in 1985 and renovated in 1999. Metro Management Services will provide property and construction management services.

SUNY Albany Builds Nanotechnology Design and Research Center

The University at Albany SUNY has selected M+W Zander to design and construct the new Nanotechnology Design and Research Center. M+W Zander U.S. Operations, a subsidiary of M+W Zander, Stuttgart, will plan and construct the entire complex with an area of 20,000 square meters including a cleanroom with an area measuring 3,500 square meters. The order volume of the first project phase, which is scheduled for completion in early 2004, amounts to $15-million. The new research complex is intended for R&D of pioneering processes and technology used in semiconductor manufacture.

Coney Island Hospital Addition Under Construction

Coney Island Hospital in Brooklyn has begun construction of its new 120,000-sf, 7-story addition. Construction manager for the $66-million modernization project is the New York Division of Skanska USA Building. The project, being undertaken on behalf of the Dormitory Authority of the State of New York, commenced in January 2002.
