LAB Research Expands Laval Facility
LAB Research Inc. is engaged in a $40 million expansion of its research facility in Laval, Quebec. Slated for completion in fall of 2008, the project will nearly double LAB’s existing footprint from 87,000-sf to 170,000-sf. Capacity for inhalation toxicology will be significantly expanded and the number of vivarium rooms will be increased 36 to 80.
Hauptman-Woodward Institute Research Center Receives Award of Merit
The Hauptman-Woodward Institute’s Structural Biology Research Center in Buffalo, N.Y., received a National Award of Merit from the Society of American Registered Architects (SARA) in January of 2008. Designed by Cannon Design of San Francisco with RFD (Research Facilities Design) as laboratory design consultant, the Structural Biology Research Center is a showcase for the state-of-the-art biomedical research that takes place within its laboratories.
Sacramento State Awarded Science Building Funding
Sacramento State University is planning a $97 million science complex in Sacramento, Calif. The project includes the Space and Science Center and the Science II building. To be constructed in two phases, the first phase consists of a 15,000-sf facility housing over 200 classrooms and a planetarium. Construction is expected to begin as early as 2009 and reach completion in 2011. The second phase is comprised of a 119,000-sf facility housing laboratories and the departments of chemistry, biology, mathematics, and statistics.
Cleveland Clinic Constructs Abu Dhabi Hospital
Cleveland Clinic broke ground in late January of 2008 on Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi (CCAD). Sited on Al Suwwa Island in Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates, the integrated hospital clinic is expected to open in 2010. The project team for the 360-bed multi-specialty hospital includes Mubadala Development Company, builder ALDAR Properties, and San Francisco-based architectural firm HDR.
University of Pittsburgh Tests H5N1 Vaccine
The University of Pittsburgh has created a vaccine against the H5N1 strain of avian influenza. The vaccine produced a strong immune response in mice and protected them from death following infection with the H5N1 virus. The vaccine was created and tested by the University’s Center for Vaccine Research and Novavax and is undergoing early-phase clinical trial testing in humans in early 2008.
