Merck Expands Durham Vaccine Campus
Merck is building a $100 million, 110,000-sf pharmaceutical production facility in the Treyburn Corporate Park in Durham, N.C. Comprised of quality testing labs, a sterile processing plant, and packaging, the project is slated for completion in 2010 and represents the second phase of expansion at Merck’s vaccine manufacturing complex. The first $300 million, 235,000-sf phase was completed in spring of 2008. The third phase, a $300 million manufacturing, warehouse, and administrative facility, will reach completion in 2011.
University of Minnesota Plans Plant Pathogen Lab
The University of Minnesota will construct a plant pathogen laboratory with greenhouses on its St. Paul campus. The project was approved by the USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service in June of 2008 and will accommodate research on diseases such as the virulent stem rust Ug99. The secure facility will feature advanced air filtration and containment technologies.
Washington County Health System Builds Hagerstown Hospital
Washington County Health System broke ground in spring of 2008 on a 511,000-sf hospital in Hagerstown, Md. Sited adjacent to Robinwood Medical Center, the facility will be comprised of three towers and is slated for completion in November of 2010. The $294 million hospital will include 297 private patient rooms, 53 emergency treatment rooms, 17 operating rooms, two cardiac rooms, and two trauma rooms.
U.S. Army Constructs Medical Education Campus at Fort Sam Houston
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has awarded San Francisco-based URS Corp. a $90 million contract to design and build two medical instruction facilities at Fort Sam Houston in Texas. As part of the Medical Education and Training Campus (METC), the buildings will provide training for military personnel in radiology, pharmacy, nuclear medicine, biomedical equipment technology, and dentistry.
IBM and Swiss Technical University Build Nanotechnology Lab
IBM is partnering with The Swiss Technical University (ETH) to construct a £44 million nanotechnology laboratory near Zurich, Switzerland. Housing 900-sm of cleanroom space, the facility will accommodate 268-sm for IBM, 258-sm for ETH, and 400-sm of shared research space. The building will be sited on IBM’s Rueschlikon campus and will house temperature-stable laboratories protected from vibrations and EMI. The facility will accommodate research on nanotubes, nano-optics, spintronics, and carbon-based materials.
