Nemours Plans Orlando Pediatric Hospital
Nemours has selected Skanska USA Building as construction manager for a $400 million pediatric hospital in the Lake Nona area of Orlando, Fla. Sited on 60 acres near University of Central Florida's College of Medicine and the Burnham Institute for Medical Research, the 600,000-sf project will break ground in 2009 and reach completion in 2012.
University of Melbourne Plans Supercomputer Facility
The University of Melbourne is planning to construct the $100 million Victorian Life Sciences Computation Initiative Centre in the University’s Parkville Precinct in Melbourne, Australia. The facility will support high performance computing for life sciences research on diseases including cancer, influenza, and brain disorders by using large databases of genetic information. The facility will partner on research initiatives with the San Diego Supercomputer Center of the University of California, San Diego.
Biocontainment Legislation Targets Select Agent Program
The Select Agent Program and Biosafety Program Improvement Act of 2008 (S 3127) was proposed by Senator Edward M. Kennedy and Richard M. Burr in June of 2008 to reauthorize the Select Agent Program to improve oversight at biocontainment labs. The bill would update the list of regulated pathogens to include genetically engineered strains as well as setting safety and worker training standards.
Virginia Tech Plans Arlington Research Center
Virginia Tech is planning to construct a $90 million research center in the Ballston area of Arlington. Strategically located near the National Science Foundation, the Office of Naval Research, and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, the seven-story, 144,000-sf facility is slated for occupancy in late 2010. The center will house 250 faculty, staff, and graduate students engaged in bioinformatics, public health, and medical informatics research, as well as the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute and the Institute of Critical Technology and Applied Science.
Miami Valley Hospital Builds Dayton Heart Tower
Miami Valley Hospital has selected a joint venture of Skanska USA Building and Shook Construction as construction manager for the 484,000-sf Heart Tower in Dayton, Ohio. Ground was broken on the $135 million facility in May of 2008 with completion slated for late 2010. Designed by NBBJ, the tower will include a comprehensive heart center, 180 private patient rooms, cardiac surgery suites, and a cardiac intervention center.
