Jackson Laboratory Builds Mouse Facility

The Jackson Laboratory broke ground on a $9 million mouse isolation facility in Bar Harbor, Maine, in August of 2009. The three-story project will provide 22,500-sf of laboratory space for the company’s reproductive services division. The facility will include suites for cryopreservation storage and mouse distribution The general contractor for the project is Consigli Construction of Portland, Maine. Completion is expected in November of 2010 with operations commencing in spring of 2011.

National Center for Atmospheric Research Plans Supercomputer Facility

The National Center for Atmospheric Research will begin construction in spring of 2010 on a $60 million supercomputer facility in Cheyenne, Wyo. The project team includes H+L Architecture of Denver, California Data Center Design Group, RMH Group, Rumsey Engineers, and Martin/Martin, Inc. Sited on 24 acres, the 100,000-sf facility will support climate research using sophisticated computer modeling technologies and will provide data storage for climate records.

College of William and Mary Opens Mason School of Business

The College of William and Mary opened the 166,000-sf Alan B. Miller Hall in August of 2009 in Williamsburg, Va. Housing the Mason School of Business, the technology-rich building houses 11 reconfigurable classrooms, a 4,000-sf multipurpose room, two seminar rooms, a communication lab, a business library, an electronic trading classroom, an atrium, and a café. Ground was broken on the $75 million facility in late March of 2007. LEED certification will be sought for the project.

University of Hawaii Hilo Builds College of Pharmacy

The University of Hawaii Hilo is constructing a $50 million facility for the College of Pharmacy. The four-building complex is sited on ten acres and will provide teaching and research labs, classrooms, and offices. The project broke ground in October of 2008 with occupancy expected in fall of 2009.

AIA Announces Healthcare Design Awards

The American Institute of Architects Healthcare Design Awards recipients for 2009 were announced in August of 2009. Recognition was given to Providence North Portland Clinic, designed by Mahlum, and to Oregon Health and Science University’s Peter O. Kohler Pavilion, designed by Perkins and Will. Both facilities are located in Portland, Ore.
