Sutter Health will establish a 12-acre medical campus in Emeryville as part of a $1 billion investment to enhance the delivery of integrated care throughout the East Bay region. The 1.3 million-sf project includes the adaptive reuse of BioMed Realty’s Emery Yards development to create a 530,000-sf outpatient complex spanning two existing structures. Advanced centers for neuroscience, orthopedics, women's health, and rheumatology will be accompanied by leading practices in pediatrics, digestive diseases, pulmonary care, dermatology, urology, ophthalmology, ENT (ear, nose and throat), and audiology. Providing non-chemotherapy infusion services, the complex will house an endoscopy center, outpatient surgical suites, imaging, and a laboratory. Occupancy is anticipated in 2028.
The construction of an adjacent acute care medical center will provide approximately 335,000 sf of world-class treatment space. Slated for completion by 2033, the inpatient hospital will initially accommodate up to 200 beds, with the capacity to support future growth. Onsite services will include emergency care, labor and delivery, an ICU, neonatal intensive care, imaging, and surgery. This building will replace acute care facilities at the Alta Bates campus in Berkeley, which will be reimagined to encompass an ambulatory surgery center, an urgent care clinic, and more. Other capital initiatives in Berkeley include the expansion of behavioral health services and the renovation of a 10,000-sf medical office building.
Driving the recruitment of primary care and specialty physicians, the Sutter Emeryville campus will include a graduate medical education center and 1,992 parking spaces in an existing garage. CBRE provided real estate services for the project. Designed by Flad Architects to achieve LEED Gold certification, the original Emery Yards complex was completed in December of 2023.
