Johns Hopkins University Plans Data Science and AI Facility

Published 2/7/2025

Johns Hopkins University is planning to construct a 476,572-sf facility for the Data Science and AI Institute (DSAI) on the Homewood Campus in Baltimore. Designed by ZGF, this global hub for research and discovery will bring together experts in artificial intelligence, machine learning, data science and translation, applied mathematics, and computer science and engineering. Led by the Whiting School of Engineering, the world-class structure will provide robust dry labs and support spaces, a suite of wet labs, and collaborative settings for teaching and learning.

A sky bridge will link two buildings offering integrated neighborhoods that strategically collocate different disciplines in unique thematic wings to cultivate collaboration and innovation. Accommodating 30 professors and 80 new faculty members, the project is a cornerstone of the university’s Ten for One strategic plan and aims to position Baltimore as a center of excellence for artificial intelligence.

Illuminated by natural light, the net-zero-carbon-ready facility is targeting LEED Gold certification and will utilize onsite energy production and electrification strategies. The sustainable development will feature a welcoming green space to promote biodiversity and foster informal exchange.

Whiting-Turner and Mahogany will serve as joint-venture construction manager for the project, with OLIN as landscape architect. Occupancy is expected by summer of 2029.
