The University of California, San Diego will begin construction on the Multidisciplinary Life Sciences Building in fall of 2024. Designed by Flad Architects, the 200,000-sf project will be the first campus development that collocates health science research with biological science research and teaching. The multiuse facility advances the university's goal of fostering unprecedented inter-unit partnerships. Scientific neighborhoods composed of cross-organizational faculty will foster interdisciplinary exchange, enabled by technologies that drive collaboration and discovery.

The six-story structure will offer over 120,000 sf of flexible and adaptable research laboratories. Teaching labs will integrate experimentation, instrumentation, and computational analysis to deliver an innovative pedagogy spanning biology, machine learning, and advanced instrumentation. In addition, the building program includes specialized shared research venues, meeting areas, conference rooms, offices, and public spaces.

A glazed façade with sculpted, perforated fins will act as a shading device and light shelf, with classrooms situated on the street level to put science on display. McCarthy Building Companies is the general contractor for the sustainably designed building, which is targeting LEED Gold certification. Completion is expected in 2027.
