Northeastern University opened the $300 million EXP building in September of 2023 in Boston. Featuring a 15,000-sf maker space, the 357,000-sf facility offers active learning environments, teaching and research labs, executive offices, a faculty club, and a café. A range of meeting and collaboration venues will catalyze interdisciplinary discovery and exchange. Housing the Institute for Experiential Robotics and the Institute for the Wireless Internet of Things, the eight-story structure will accelerate the creation of new technologies, autonomous vehicles, robots, and drones.

Targeting LEED Platinum certification, the highly sustainable project was designed by Payette to provide maximum flexibility, enabling research spaces to be easily converted between dry and wet functions. A free-form pedestrian bridge spanning 500 feet connects the center to Northeastern’s main campus. Suffolk Construction Company broke ground in summer of 2020 on the building, which complements the adjacent Interdisciplinary Science and Engineering Complex.
