Caltech has begun site work for the Dr. Allen and Charlotte Ginsburg Center for Quantum Precision Measurement in Pasadena, Calif. Designed by HOK, the four-story, 116,451-sf facility will support interdisciplinary research programs in quantum sensing, quantum information, and gravitational-wave detection. Open interaction zones and collaboration spaces will promote dynamic knowledge exchange and discovery, complemented by a range of office settings and meeting rooms. Featuring a shared venue for laser experiments, the structure will house the Kip Thorne Laboratories where investigators will engage in basic research on the behavior of controlled quantum systems and develop advanced measurement devices. A basement level with robust vibration mitigation technologies will accommodate labs and instrumentation suites, while an adjoining single-story building will provide additional offices, a seminar room, and areas for mechanical equipment.

The sustainably designed facility is slated to achieve LEED Gold certification. Extensive interior and exterior glazing will transmit natural light into the highly transparent structure and promote visual connectivity among building occupants. Pankow Builders is the general contractor for the project's pre-construction phase, with construction commencing by early 2024. Occupancy is expected in fall of 2025.
