The University of Connecticut opened the $240 million Science One building in January of 2023. Housing the Institute of Materials Science and Engineering, the 198,000-sf facility provides research, teaching, and core laboratories arranged in a modular configuration for optimal flexibility and adaptability. The interdisciplinary structure also offers a 240-seat active learning venue, a cleanroom, faculty and administrative offices, and a variety of settings for informal interaction and study. Designed by Payette, the highly sustainable development has attained both LEED Gold and SITES Silver certification. Construction began in August of 2020 on the three-story building, which anchors the Northwest Science Quad where the university plans to expand its innovative STEM programs in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
