The University of California, San Francisco is planning to construct the $842 million Research and Academic Building on its Parnassus Heights campus. Designed by HGA and Snøhetta to foster interdisciplinary exchange and discovery, the 300,000-gsf facility will provide advanced laboratories for programs in oncology, microbiology, immunology, and cell biology. The nine-story structure will also house instructional venues, an area for clinical trials, the Bakar ImmunoX Initiative, the Benioff Center for Microbiome Medicine, and the CoLabs Initiative.

Enhancing connections with the surrounding community, a publicly accessible pathway will encircle the development, which will include a dedicated elevator allowing visitors to enjoy an inspirational view of the Golden Gate Bridge. A new promenade will unite the east and west ends of the campus while linking numerous open spaces landscaped with native plants. Targeting a minimum of LEED Gold sustainable design certification, the all-electric project will feature a high-performance building envelope with bird-safe glazing that reduces glare while admitting ample natural light.
