The University of Texas at San Antonio opened the $91.8 million San Pedro I building in January of 2023. Designed by Jacobs and Overland Partners, the six-story, 167,000-sf structure provides the School of Data Science with 84,000 sf of classrooms, labs, and offices for the departments of computer science, computer engineering, information systems and cybersecurity, and statistics and data sciences. The National Security Collaboration Center occupies 81,000 sf of research space in the facility, enabling academic, government, and industry partners to develop new technologies for data analytics, artificial intelligence, machine learning, visualization, and post-quantum cryptography. The NSCC also integrates the Cybersecurity Manufacturing Innovation Institute and areas for cyber workforce training programs. A 300-seat conference center promotes knowledge exchange across disciplines, catalyzing regional economic growth and the creation of new business ventures. Additionally, four suites and 16 offices are available for private companies. Whiting-Turner was the design-build contractor for the LEED-certified project, which broke ground in January of 2021.
A second phase of construction at the site will create the $124.5 million Innovation, Entrepreneurship, and Careers Building, also known as San Pedro II. Designed by Gensler and Overland Partners, the six-story, 180,000-sf facility will accommodate applied education courses in business, engineering, and the sciences. Groundbreaking is slated for summer of 2023 with occupancy expected in spring of 2026.
