The University of Washington will break ground in fall of 2022 on the $102 million Interdisciplinary Engineering Building in Seattle. Designed by KieranTimberlake and McGranahan Architects, the 70,000-sf facility will act as the academic home for all undergraduate engineering students on campus. Featuring flexible classrooms, teaching labs, and maker spaces, the welcoming and inclusive structure will provide gathering areas, informal interaction venues, and shared research labs where faculty members and student teams can engage in hands-on exploration and discovery. Housing the AI Education Institute, the building will catalyze the integration of machine learning and artificial intelligence technologies into the university’s engineering curriculum. With dedicated space for industry-affiliated capstone projects, the collaborative facility will foster partnerships with leading employers to ensure a pipeline of skilled workers and promote regional economic growth. The second level of the development will be named for Boeing in recognition of a $10 million donation.
Research Facilities Design (RFD) is the laboratory design consultant for the project, which is being built by Hensel Phelps. Completion is expected in summer of 2024.
