Cardiff University opened the £80 million Translational Research Hub in July of 2022 in the United Kingdom. Housing the Institute for Compound Semiconductors and the Cardiff Catalysis Institute, the 129,000-sf facility provides specialized labs, collaboration spaces, and offices where scientists can work side-by-side with industrial partners to create new technological solutions for pressing challenges in manufacturing, energy, transportation, and healthcare. HOK provided architectural, interior design, and lab planning services for the six-story structure, which includes a 16,000-sf cleanroom and a state-of-the-art microscopy suite.

Bouygues was the general contractor for the sustainably designed development, which is part of the £300 million Cardiff Innovation Campus. The Translational Research Hub is strategically sited adjacent to the Social Science Research Park (SPARK) which offers business incubation facilities to accelerate the commercialization of research discoveries. Designed by Hawkins\Brown, the six-story, 129,000-sf building features the Oculus, an interactive staircase with breakout zones on each level, and the Play Box, a flexible auditorium for events and seminars. SPARK officially opened in March of 2022.
