EMD Serono completed construction in March of 2022 on the $70 million Horizon Building in Billerica, Mass. Designed by PM Group, the 149,000-sf structure provides collaborative research environments to accelerate the creation of specialty pharmaceuticals. The mixed-use R&D facility includes approximately 30,000 sf of flexible wet lab space featuring reconfigurable benches and overhead service panels with plug-and-play connectivity. Linked by pedestrian bridges to the existing campus, the highly interactive building includes open office environments, conference rooms, huddle areas, and a central cafeteria. With an emphasis on reducing or eliminating occupational hazards and risks, the four-story development integrates Prevention through Design principles and has also attained WELL Platinum and LEED Gold certifications.
The project team included Erland Construction, mechanical and electrical engineer BR+A, civil engineer BSC Group, structural engineer LeMessurier, and interior designer Intec Group.
EMD Serono is the biopharmaceutical subsidiary of Merck KGaA, based in Darmstadt, Germany.
