North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University opened the $90 million Harold L. Martin Sr. Engineering Research & Innovation Complex in Greensboro in February of 2022. Designed by EYP Architecture & Engineering, the four-story, 130,000-gsf building accommodates programs in cybersecurity and network systems, energy and sustainability, and health applications. Leveraging extensive internal and external glazing to put science on display, the collaborative structure offers open labs for wet and dry research, high-bay areas, maker spaces, reconfigurable classrooms, seminar rooms, offices, and an airy central atrium. This dynamic hub for experiential learning features core labs for biomechanics, computer science, and manufacturing systems to catalyze innovation and the creation of industry partnerships. Housing the Facility for Intelligent Robotics, Sensing, and Telepresence (FIRST), the interdisciplinary complex also includes a sophisticated vehicle-in-the-loop driving simulator called the Reality Emulation and Augmentation Laboratory (REAL). The 3D Holographic Design Studio provides a virtual environment for product development, digital twinning, medical diagnosis, and social engagement. Ground was broken on the project in October of 2018.
