Imperial College London opened the £70 million Sir Michael Uren Biomedical Engineering Research Hub in London in December of 2021. Designed by Allies and Morrison, the 13-story, 215,000-sf building provides flexible laboratories, a 160-seat auditorium, and a variety of social spaces to foster interaction and informal knowledge exchange. The collaborative structure houses interdisciplinary initiatives including the School of Public Health’s Environmental Research Group, the Musculoskeletal Medical Engineering Centre, the MSk Lab, the Dementia Research Institute, and the Centre for Cardiovascular Bioengineering.
Located on the White City campus, the translational research facility has attained BREEAM Excellent sustainable design certification and features a highly efficient service model with interconnected utility plants on each floor. The exterior of the building incorporates over 1,300 precast fins that were manufactured using a method that significantly reduces carbon emissions. Turner & Townsend was the project manager for the development with ISG as construction manager, Abell Nepp Architects as lab planner, JLL as civil engineer, Buro Happold as mechanical and electrical engineer, Curtins as structural engineer, and Faithful+Gould as cost consultant. Work began on the facility in early 2017.
