Santa Clara University opened the $253.5 million Sobrato Campus for Discovery and Innovation in September of 2021. Designed by ZGF Architects with Research Facilities Design (RFD) as laboratory design consultant, the 270,000-sf facility provides leading-edge teaching and research environments for STEM programs in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Comprising three wings surrounding a central courtyard, the multidisciplinary complex offers flexible, cross-functional labs, interactive classrooms, collaboration hubs, study spaces, and faculty offices. The Innovation Zone, a 3,000-sf maker space with 30-foot-high windows, provides sophisticated tools for design and fabrication, with the adjacent Innovation Lounge offering a welcoming venue for ideation and engagement. The Sobrato Campus also houses the Latimer Energy Lab, the Imaginarium virtual reality lab, the Wave computer lab, and large garage workshops where undergraduate students can participate in projects big and small. General contractor Devcon Construction began work on the sustainably designed facility in fall of 2018. The LEED-certified development is expected to approach net-zero energy performance.
