Matrix Innovation Center broke ground in December of 2020 on the Matrix 1 lab and office complex in Amsterdam. Designed by MVRDV to attain BREEAM Excellent certification, the six-story, 140,000-sf project will utilize demountable construction techniques so that the steel supports and concrete floors can be disassembled at the end of the structure's lifespan, enabling 89 percent of the materials to be reused. A green roof with integrated photovoltaic panels will act as a water buffer while increasing the biodiversity of the site in the Amsterdam Science Park. A unique zigzag-shaped staircase will channel natural ventilation upwards through the building, as well as providing a collaborative link between the facility's flexible labs, offices, and social areas. Offering leasable space for private companies, Matrix 1 will also house SustainaLab, a research hub for the discovery of new technologies and solutions for climate change mitigation. De Vries en Verburg is the construction manager for the project, which is slated for completion in 2022.
