Rutgers University opened the $115 million Chemistry and Chemical Biology Building in September of 2018 in Piscataway, N.J. Designed by Flad Architects to promote multidisciplinary collaboration, the four-story, 144,000-sf facility offers core facilities including a microscopy suite, a Class 100 chemistry cleanroom, and labs for optical spectroscopy, NMR spectroscopy, and X-ray crystallography. Technology-enhanced classrooms and conference rooms support interactive teaching and learning, and the facility’s modular design and versatile infrastructure allow spaces to be easily reconfigured. The Chemistry and Chemical Biology Building will help accelerate innovative work in biophysical chemistry related to human health, drug design and synthesis, alternative energy, biomaterials, and nanotechnology. LEED Gold sustainable design certification will be sought for the project, which features an advanced HVAC system and a sophisticated building envelope. The general contractor for the facility was Barr & Barr, with Concord Engineering as commissioning consultant. Ground was broken on the project in June of 2014.
