The University of Toronto is building the Centre for Engineering Innovation & Entrepreneurship in Toronto, Ontario. Designed by Montgomery Sisam Architects and Fielden Clegg Bradley Studios, the CAD$200 million facility will feature TEAL classrooms for technology-enhanced active learning, a two-story atrium offering abundant natural light, a 500-seat auditorium, and studios for design, fabrication, and prototyping. Standing eight stories above grade with two levels underground, the 161,500-gsf (77,500-nsf) building will house the Institute for Multidisciplinary Design and Innovation; the Institute for Robotics and Mechatronics; the Centre for Global Engineering; the Institute for Leadership in Education in Engineering; the Institute for Sustainable Energy; and the Institute for Water Innovation. The collaborative facility will also include an entrepreneurship incubator and space for undergraduate student clubs. LEED Gold sustainable design certification will be sought for the building, which will feature passive solar shading, rainwater harvesting, a rooftop photovoltaic array, and a sophisticated HVAC system with isolation technologies to mitigate the transfer of noise and vibration. General contractor Bird Construction broke ground on the facility June of 2015 and occupancy is expected in fall of 2017.
