The University of California, San Diego dedicated the $113 million Health Sciences Biomedical Research Facility in March of 2014 in La Jolla, Calif. Designed by ZGF Architects, the 196,000-sf building provides wet bench laboratories, open lab space, lab support, offices, conference rooms, and an interaction atrium. A basement level accommodates core labs and mechanical systems. The collaborative facility is located on the School of Medicine campus and will support research in genomics, bioinformatics, neurosciences, cardiology, immunology, pathology, gastrointestinal medicine, and infectious diseases.
The project team included laboratory planning consultant RFD (Research Facilities Design), KPFF Consulting Engineer (structural), IBE Consulting Engineers (MEP), Integrated Engineering Consultants (electrical), and landscape architect Spurlock Poirier. General contractor McCarthy began construction of the facility in April of 2011. LEED Platinum sustainable design certification will be sought for the building, which features sophisticated HVAC systems and computer-controlled exterior solar shading. Building Information Modeling (BIM) was used extensively in the delivery of the project for the coordination of mechanical systems.
