Research and Development

The University of New England dedicated the Pickus Center for Biomedical Research and the Cecile Morgane Research Laboratories in October of 2008. Located in Biddeford, Maine, the $6 million, 22,000-sf collaborative research facility includes six laboratories, 12 faculty offices, and two conference rooms. Designed by Einhorn Yaffee Prescott of Boston, the project includes space for a future vivarium. The general contractor was Wright Ryan Construction of Portland.

The University of Tennessee Health Science Center’s $25 million Regional Biocontainment Laboratory is slated for completion in early 2009. Located in the UT-Baptist Research Park in Memphis, the 30,315-gsf (16,250-nsf) project will provide 7,300-sf of BSL-3 research space, 1,257-sf of BSL-2 research space, and 7,695-sf of office and support space. Additionally, UTHSC will initiate construction in the first half of 2009 on a 50,000-sf to 70,000-sf vivarium adjacent to the RBL. Completion is expected in 2010.

Purdue University is planning to construct the $18 million Seng-Liang Wang Hall in West Lafayette, Ind. Housing the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering, the 39,370-sf facility is slated for completion in 2010. The project will include the Robert and Janet Fenwick Very-Large-Scale Integration and Circuit Design Complex, a computational lab, research laboratories, conference rooms, interaction space, and faculty offices. The project will include specialized research laboratories for optics, photonics, circuit design, and computational nanoelectronics.

The University of Oregon is planning to construct the $65 million Robert and Beverly Lewis Integrative Science Building in Eugene. Slated for completion by 2012, the 100,000-sf interdisciplinary research and teaching building will house facilities for neurosciences, life sciences, geosciences, materials and physical sciences, and computational and information sciences. Designed to foster collaboration, the project will include shared analysis facilities, advanced imaging technologies, conference rooms, and classrooms.

Texas A&M University will begin construction in November of 2008 on a $13.1 million Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Facility in College Station. Housing NMR spectrometers, the building will support research for the University’s structural biology program. The project is expected to reach completion by May of 2010.

Leibniz University is building the €14 million Nano and Quantum Engineering Laboratory in Hanover, Germany. The project includes 430 sm of chemical, measurement and laser laboratories; 509 sm of researcher workrooms; and a 410 sm cleanroom. The facility was designed by architect KSP Engel and Zimmerman. Completion is slated for summer of 2009.

The University of California, Davis broke ground on the $62 million Institute for Regenerative Cures on September 26, 2008. The 54,200-sf stem cell research facility will be located in a 92,000-sf building on the University’s Sacramento campus. Housing multidisciplinary research teams, the collaborative facility will include wet labs, an FDA-approved GMP lab, a Specific Pathogen Free (SPF) barrier facility, a stem cell bank, fluorescence-activated cell sorting core space, conference rooms, offices, and laboratories for basic discovery and translational research.

SUNY Binghamton University began construction on the $66 million Engineering and Science Facility in October of 2008. Located in Binghamton, N.Y., the 125,000-sf building will house flexible laboratories, offices, and incubator space. The two-story project represents an expansion of the Innovative Technologies Complex and will house the departments of mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, and computer engineering. Completion is expected in 2011.

The Marshfield Clinic dedicated the $40 million Laird Center for Medical Research in October of 2008 in Wausau, Wis. The 118,000-sf facility houses research and clinical laboratories for human genetics, emerging infectious diseases, and biomedical informatics. Designed to support translational research, the project broke ground in 2006 and represents an expansion of the existing Laird Center on the Marshfield Clinic campus.

The University of Central Florida dedicated the $850,000 Siemens Energy Center in Orlando in October of 2008. Created in partnership with Siemens Power Generation, the 10,900-sf laboratory will provide collaborative research space for UCF and Siemens to develop sustainable power generation technologies. Construction on the facility began in January of 2008.

The University of Queensland opened the National Imaging Facility in Brisbane, Australia, on October 1, 2008. The project houses a $4.5 million PET/MRI system, a $3.5 million 9.4T scanner, a $2.1 million research cyclotron, a $1.5 million 1.5T MRI, and an $800,000 Micro Animal PET. The facility is housed in the Centre for Magnetic Resonance and provides advanced molecular imaging capabilities.

The University of South Florida has selected HOK to design its new $82 million interdisciplinary science teaching and research facility. The 260,610-sf building will be located on the University’s Tampa campus.

The University of Louisville is constructing the $34.6 million Center for Predictive Medicine on its East Louisville campus in Shelby County, Ky. The 37,000-sf project is an NIH-funded Regional Biodefense Laboratory and houses BSL-3 facilities for research on emerging infectious diseases and bioterrorism prevention. The building broke ground in 2006 and is slated for occupancy in summer of 2009. The project contractor is Messer of Cincinnati with International Commissioning Engineers as commissioning agent.

Purdue University is planning to construct the $40 million ETB project on its Calumet campus in Hammond, Ind. SmithGroup’s Detroit office will provide consulting design, lab design, and lab planning services for the approximately 77,000-gsf facility. Groundbreaking is expected in 2010. The project will provide offices and laboratories for research and teaching for the Department of Biological Sciences, Nursing, and the School of Education, as well as housing the PUC Centers and Institutes and affiliated laboratories.

The Naval Surface Warfare Center initiated construction in October of 2008 on the $25 million Research Development and Acquisition and Test and Evaluation Consolidation Facility in Dahlgren, Va. The two-story, 58,000-sf R&D laboratory will provide combat systems certification and is slated for occupancy in June of 2010. The project, which will accommodate approximately 130 employees, will include offices, labs, and an anechoic chamber for audio component testing.
