University of Nevada's Center for Molecular Medicine Nears Completion

The University of Nevada, Reno’s Center for Molecular Medicine will open in September of 2010. Designed by Dekker/Perich/Sabatini, the $77 million facility will house research laboratories, containment suites, offices, an auditorium, and a vivarium for 40,000 mice. Ground was broken on the 116,500-sf project in March 2007. The facility will accommodate research in microbiology, pharmacology, and physiology.

Cornell University Designs Gates Hall

Cornell University has selected Morphosis of Los Angeles to design the 100,000-sf William H. Gates Hall. Housing the departments of computer science and information science, the $60 million facility will feature research and teaching labs designed to foster interaction and collaboration. Completion is expected by early 2014.

Louisiana Tech University Plans College of Business

Louisiana Tech University will break ground by December of 2010 on a 42,000-sf facility for the College of Business in Ruston. Supported by $12.4 million in state funding, the facility will house two auditoriums, classrooms, offices, computer labs, conference rooms, and research space. The project architect is Yeager, Watson and Associates of Alexandria, Va.

Purdue University Renovates Lilly Hall

Purdue University will begin construction in September of 2010 on a $5.5 million renovation of Lilly Hall’s west wing. The project will upgrade HVAC systems and replace windows and the passenger elevator. The general contractor for the renovation is J.R. Kelly Co. Inc. of Lafayette, Ind. Completion is expected in July of 2011.

Connecticut College Plans Science Center

Connecticut College will renovate and expand New London Hall to create a state-of-the-art science center in New London, Conn. Designed by Payette, the $20 million project will provide 23,673 nsf of collaborative research and teaching space for the departments of computer science and life sciences. Groundbreaking is expected in spring of 2011 with occupancy in fall of 2012. The interdisciplinary facility will house research and teaching labs, classrooms, computer labs, a greenhouse, and an electron microscopy suite.

Luzerne County Community College Completes Paglianite Culinary Institute

Luzerne County Community College will open the Joseph A. Paglianite Culinary Institute in September of 2010. Located in Nanticoke, Pa., the 22,000-sf facility was designed by SDA Architects and built by Mark Construction Services. The two-story building will house a 75-seat lecture auditorium, two teaching labs, a kitchen, and a restaurant dining room.

University of Glasgow Opens Animal Hospital

The University of Glasgow opened its £15 million animal hospital in July of 2010. The facility houses four operating rooms, MRI and CT scanners, oncology and endoscopy suites, and a pain and rehabilitation center. The world-class animal hospital will support veterinary medicine education and training.

William Paterson University Completes Science Annex

William Paterson University completed construction of the 67,000-sf Science Annex in July of 2010 in Wayne, N.J. The facility houses an atrium, classrooms, lecture halls, 18 research labs, and 12 teaching labs. The technology-rich addition was designed by HOK to foster interaction and collaboration between faculty and students in the disciplines of biology, biotechnology, molecular research, physics, chemistry, physiology, environmental science, and ecology.

University of Nottingham Builds Bioenergy Centre

The University of Nottingham began construction in July of 2010 on the £26 million Bioenergy Centre in the United Kingdom. Designed by maber, the facility will house the Food and Biofuel Innovation Centre, the Centre for Brewing Technology and Innovation, and one of six Sustainable Bioenergy Centre research programs. The 3,100-sm building will feature laboratories, pilot production suites, and facilities for incubation, testing, and demonstration. Completion is expected in March of 2011.

University of Florida's Biomedical Sciences Building Attains LEED Gold

The University of Florida's $90.5 million Biomedical Sciences Building in Gainesville was awarded LEED Gold sustainable design certification in July of 2010. The eight-story, 163,000-sf translational research facility houses the Health Science Center Colleges, the Biomedical Engineering Department of the College of Engineering, and Animal Care Services. The building opened in November of 2009 and was dedicated in May of 2010.

UC Santa Barbara Attains LEED Certification for Research Facilities

The University of California Santa Barbara was awarded LEED certification for its Life Sciences and Engineering II buildings in June of 2010. A 20,000-sf addition to the Engineering II facility was awarded LEED Gold certification for new construction. The facility was completed in early 2010 and houses classrooms, labs, and administrative offices for the Solid State Lighting and Energy Center. The 80,000-sf Life Sciences Building was awarded LEED Silver in the existing buildings category. The facility house 35,000 sf of lab space and a 150-seat lecture hall.

Kennesaw State University Opens Health Science Building

Kennesaw State University completed construction of the 200,000-sf Health Science Building in Kennesaw, Ga., in July of 2010. Designed by Cooper Carry, the facility provides labs and classrooms for the WellStar College of Health and Human Services. Consolidating departments previously located in seven separate buildings, the facility features a wet lab for faculty research, a data analysis room, nine technology-rich classrooms, simulation suites, and 13,000 sf of nursing laboratory space.

Griffith University Plans Zero-Energy Teaching and Research Building

Griffith University is planning to construct the $21 million Sir Samuel Griffith Building in Nathan, Queensland, Australia. Designed by Cox Architects, the zero-emission facility will utilize solar-hydrogen energy and will be completely self-powered. The six-story, 4,000-sm building will house laboratories, classrooms, and offices for environmental science research and teaching. The Griffith Building will also function as a demonstration project for solar-hydrogen energy systems.

San Jacinto College Breaks Ground on Transportation Center

San Jacinto College broke ground on the 95,000-sf Transportation Center in June of 2010 in Pasadena, Calif. The $20 million facility will house the school’s automotive department and is expected to open in August of 2011. The building will provide 48 automotive bays for instruction in vehicle repair and maintenance. The project team includes Morris Architects and general contractor Durotech. LEED Silver sustainable design certification will be sought for the facility.
