ZGF Architects LLP is an architecture, planning, and interior design firm with offices in Portland, Seattle, Los Angeles, New York City, and Washington, D.C. Total staff currently numbers 460. ZGF's work has been recognized with more than 500 national, regional, and local awards. In 1991, the firm received the national Architecture Firm Award from the American Institute of Architects. In the two decades since, ZGF has designed over 100 research facilities totaling more than 20 million square feet of space, five of which have been awarded the national distinction of "Laboratory of the Year". Clients include the National Institutes of Health; Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center; Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center; the University of Chicago; University of Virginia; University of Arizona; University of Texas; Duke University; University of California; University of Southern California; Northwestern University; Cornell University; Oregon Health Sciences University; Amgen; and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

University of Montana Plans College of Forestry and Conservation

The University of Montana is planning to construct a new home for the W.A. Franke College of Forestry and Conservation in Missoula. Designed by ZGF Architects and A&E Design, the 60,000-sf project will collocate facilities currently dispersed across campus in a vibrant hub for teaching and research. This living laboratory will serve as a teaching tool for sustainable forestry and wood construction spanning design, material application, and supply chain transparency.

Wexford Science + Technology and UC Davis Build Aggie Square

Wexford Science + Technology is constructing the $1.2 billion Aggie Square on the Sacramento campus of the University of California, Davis. Designed by ZGF Architects, the innovation district is being developed in association with GMH Capital Partners. The 8.25-acre site will feature an expansive plaza framed by three glass-clad structures providing between 230,000 sf and 310,000 sf each.

Carnegie Mellon Breaks Ground on Richard King Mellon Hall of Sciences

Carnegie Mellon University broke ground in early 2024 on the $252 million Richard King Mellon Hall of Sciences in Pittsburgh. Designed by ZGF Architects and R3A Architecture, the 338,900-sf complex will advance a new era of data-driven research, cross-disciplinary education, and creative expression. The transformative development will collocate the College of Science and the School of Computer Science with the Institute for Contemporary Art Pittsburgh in a prominent city intersection to foster connections with the local community.

UC Merced Plans Medical Education Facility

The University of California is planning to construct the $300 million Medical Education Building in Merced. Designed by ZGF Architects, the 203,500-sf project will serve as the headquarters for a multicampus career pathway developed in partnership with UC San Francisco and UCSF Fresno. The four-story structure will provide class laboratories, specialized learning venues, general assignment classrooms, clinical practicum spaces, research labs, offices, and a café.

Wexford Develops Innovation Hub for the University of Washington

Wexford Science + Technology will break ground in mid-2024 on Brightwork, the anchor building for the University of Washington’s planned innovation district in Seattle. The 345,000-sf facility will be constructed by Wexford for an estimated cost of $282.5 million, with UW investing $72 million for tenant improvements. After an 80-year lease, the 11-story structure will revert to university ownership.
