The $55.5 million Saskatchewan Disease Control Laboratory opened in Regina on May 18, 2010. Located in the University of Regina’s Innovation Place research park, the secure facility provides CL3 laboratories for the study of infectious diseases. Designed by P3 Architects, the laboratory is constructed with robust HVAC systems, HEPA filtration, vibration isolation, and an effluent decontamination system. LEED certification will be sought for the laboratory, which features an advanced building envelope, automatic lighting, and rainwater harvesting.
The University of California Los Angeles will begin construction in November of 2010 on the $115.6 million Edie and Lew Wasserman Eye Research Center. Housing the Jules Stein Eye Institute and the departments of neurosurgery and urologic oncology of the Geffen School of Medicine, the six-story, 100,000-sf project will provide research laboratories, surgical suites, a conference center, medical training and simulation facilities, a telemedicine center, and patient care. The facility is being designed by Richard Meier & Partners Architects.
Weill Cornell Medical College broke ground on the $650 million Medical Research Building in New York on May 26, 2010. The 480,000-sf facility will support interdisciplinary research on cancer, stem cells, diabetes, and infectious diseases. Laboratories will occupy 13 floors of the 18-story building. Completion is expected in July of 2013.
The University of Vermont dedicated the $55.7 million Jeffords Hall in Burlington on May 22, 2010. The 97,000-sf academic and research facility houses teaching labs, classrooms, offices, and research space. Housing the departments of Plant Biology and Plant and Soil Science, the three-story building will support molecular, ecological, and environmental research and teaching. The project features an underground central steam and chilled water system. LEED Gold sustainable design certification will be sought for the facility.
The National Institutes of Health National Center for Research Resources announced $1 billion in funding in May of 2010 for the construction and renovation of research facilities. A total of 146 grants were awarded to institutions in 44 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
