ICC Launches International Green Construction Code

The International Code Council has partnered with ASHRAE, the U.S. Green Building Council, and the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America to launch the International Green Construction Code (IGCC). Providing a regulatory framework for the construction of high-performance commercial buildings, the guidance covers criteria including water use efficiency, indoor environmental quality, energy efficiency, materials and resource use, and site impact.

College of the Holy Cross Opens Integrated Science Complex

The College of the Holy Cross celebrated the opening of the $63 million Integrated Science Complex in March of 2010. Located in Worcester, Mass., the four-story facility provides 142,000 gsf of new and renovated classroom, lecture, research, and laboratory space. Designed to foster interaction and collaboration, the interdisciplinary complex includes an atrium, conference rooms, and shared equipment suites. The Integrated Science Complex is comprised of the Park B. and Linda Smith Laboratories and the renovated Haberlin Hall.

Washington University School of Medicine Expands Genomics Data Center

Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis will begin construction in fall of 2010 on an expansion of its genomics data center. Doubling the size of the existing 16,000-sf facility, the completed 32,000-sf building will house advanced sequencing and bioinformatics technologies. The project is supported by $14.3 million in stimulus funding from the National Center for Research Resources.

University of Pittsburgh Medical Center Partners with Battelle, IBM, Merck, and GE Healthcare on Vaccine Factory

The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center is partnering with Battelle, IBM, Merck, and GE Healthcare to plan the construction of a vaccine factory in the Pittsburgh area. Operated in partnership with the federal government, the facility would support rapid response to bioterrorism and infectious disease threats. The construction cost of the vaccine factory is estimated at $900 million.

Construction Begins on Arizona State Forensic Hospital

The $23 million Arizona State Forensic Hospital is under construction in Phoenix. The 104,000-sf facility will provide 80 inpatient beds and is slated for completion in September of 2011. The facility was designed by Cannon Design and Jacobs Engineering Group and is being built by Gilbane Building Co. The forensic hospital will house testing areas, isolation rooms, a security center, and dining facilities for patients who are charged with criminal behavior but are too mentally ill to stand trial.
