IBM Constructs Swiss Nanotechnology Lab

IBM’s £44 million nanotechnology laboratory in Rueschlikon, Switzerland, is slated for completion in spring of 2011. Created in partnership with The Swiss Technical University (ETH), the facility will provide 900 sm of cleanroom space and temperature-stable subterranean laboratories protected from vibrations and electromagnetic interference. The building will feature geothermal heating, photovoltaic panels, and a parking garage with a green roof.

General Motors India Opens Flexible Engine Facility

General Motors (GM) opened a $230 million flexible engine facility in Talegaon, India, in November of 2010. Construction began on the project in December of 2008. The powertrain manufacturing plant supports simultaneous production of both diesel and gasoline engines. The facility has an initial annual production capacity of 160,000 engines.

Neste Opens Singapore Renewable Diesel Plant

Neste Oil opened a €550 million renewable diesel plant in Singapore in November of 2010. The facility has a capacity of 800,000 tons annually and is the largest of its kind worldwide. The plant produces NExBTL biological diesel from animal fats and palm oil. Neste Oil is headquartered in Finland.

Mölnlycke Health Care Plans Research and Manufacturing Facility

Mölnlycke Health Care will break ground in January of 2011 on a $37 million research and manufacturing facility in Brunswick, Maine. The 79,800-sf building will be located in the redeveloped Brunswick Naval Air Station and is slated for occupancy in December of 2011. The architect for the two-story project is Harriman Architects and Engineers of Auburn, Maine. The construction cost of the facility is $12 million with $25 million for advanced machinery and equipment. The building will accommodate 85 employees.

University of Cambridge Breaks Ground on Materials Science Facility

The University of Cambridge broke ground on a £41 million facility for the Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy in November of 2010. The 10,200-sm building was designed by NBBJ and will house laboratories, offices, support, and social space. An electron microscopy facility will be built on an isolated concrete slab to eliminate vibration and electromagnetic interference. Consolidating five existing facilities, the project will integrate teaching and research activities in a facility designed to maximize interaction and collaboration.
