Biocontainment Lab Under Construction in Kazakhstan

A $103 million biocontainment laboratory is under construction in Almaty, Kazakhstan. Supported by funding from the U.S. Cooperative Threat Reduction program, the facility will include BSL-2 and BSL-3 research areas for the detection and study of biological threats and pathogens. Construction began on the laboratory in March of 2010.

Sarasota Memorial Hospital Breaks Ground on Courtyard Tower

Sarasota Memorial Hospital broke ground on the $186 million Courtyard Tower in January of 2011. The nine-story patient care facility will house 220 private patient rooms, a neonatal ICU, surgical suites, labor and delivery, cardiology, and orthopedic care. Completion is expected in December of 2012. The project is the centerpiece of a $250 million campus renovation.

University Health System Breaks Ground on San Antonio Expansion

University Health System broke ground in January of 2011 on a $778 million patient tower in San Antonio. The 10-story, 1 million-sf facility will house 420 private rooms, 35 operating rooms, and an emergency department. The design team includes Perkins + Will, Garza/Bomberger & Associates, RVK Architects, and Richard Sanchez Architects. Occupancy is expected in spring of 2014.

Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency Plans Arlington Headquarters

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency is building a 355,000-sf headquarters facility in Arlington, Va. The project team includes architect RTKL and general contractor Clark Construction Group. The 13-story office building will meet Level IV security standards and is slated for completion in early 2012. LEED Gold sustainable design certification will be sought for the project. The facility represents the first phase of the planned 1.2 million-sf Founders Square mixed-use project.

Raytheon Opens Maryland Facility

Raytheon Company opened a 75,000-sf facility at the Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland in January of 2011. Promoting collaboration with the U.S. military on warfighter technologies and systems, the facility provides offices, laboratories, and customer presentation facilities. The center houses 200 employees for Raytheon's Advanced Communications and Countermeasures group and its U.S. Business Development office. The facility is built to meet LEED Silver sustainable design standards.
