Clark College Opens STEM Building

Clark College opened its $40 million STEM building in October of 2016 in Vancouver, Wash. Designed by LSW Architects to support programs in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, the three-story, 70,000-sf project provides classrooms, teaching labs, and offices for the departments of biology, chemistry, geology, physics, and engineering.

Lonza Expands Pearland Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Facility

Global pharmaceutical manufacturer Lonza is expanding its production facilities in Pearland, Texas. Work began in March of 2016 on a 100,000-sf clinical manufacturing center, which will begin operations in late 2017. A second phase of construction will begin in fall of 2016 at the site, providing an additional 150,000 sf of office, laboratory, and manufacturing space.

Karolinska University Hospital Constructs Huddinge Medical Building

Karolinska University Hospital has awarded Skanska the $140 million contract to construct a 312,000-sf medical building in Huddinge, Sweden. The project will include eight interventional services rooms, 21 exam rooms with integrated imaging technologies, 23 surgical suites, and a sterilization center. The sustainably designed facility is expected to attain Gold certification from the Sweden Green Building Council. Construction began in June 2016 and completion is slated for 2019.

Whittier College Opens Science and Learning Center

Whittier College opened the Science and Learning Center in September of 2016 in Whittier, Calif. Designed by Steinberg Architects with Research Facilities Design (RFD) as laboratory design consultant, the $52 million project included a complete renovation of the 89,000-sf Stauffer Science Building to create a collaborative, interdisciplinary facility for STEM programs in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

University of Chicago Medicine Constructs Emergency and Trauma Center

University of Chicago Medicine broke ground in September of 2016 on a $43 million emergency department and trauma center. Located in Hyde Park adjacent to the Center for Care and Discovery, the 29,017-gsf facility will feature four trauma resuscitation bays, private patient rooms, a bariatric room with ceiling lifts, and a medical biocontainment unit. Completion is expected in early 2018.
