Kutztown University Plans New Science Center
Kutztown University has plans to renovate and expand its science teaching facilities. The Pennsylvania Department of General Services has contracted with STV Architects to design the $14 million Kutztown University Science Center. The Boehm and Grim Science Buildings will undergo renovation and a 70,000-sf addition to the Boehm building will be constructed. The center will accommodate and promote new technologies and will encompass the biology, chemistry, marine science, physics, geography, geology, physical science, and astronomy departments.
UC Berkeley Plans New Science Research Building
University of California, Berkeley, has plans for a new $85 million, 240,000-sf interdisciplinary science research building to replace the seismically unsafe Stanley Hall. The state-of-the-art structure will house teaching labs and support functions for many disciplines: structural biology, bioengineering, chemical biology, computation and theoretical biology, and magnetic imaging. The architect for the project will be Portland, Ore.-based Zimmer Gunsul Frasca Partnership.
University of Maryland Plans Renovation
University of Maryland, Baltimore County, has selected Boston-based Einhorn Yaffee Prescott, Architecture & Engineering, P.E. (EYP), to renovate the 137,000-sf undergraduate Chemistry/Biochemistry Building. The renovation will increase the number and quality of teaching and research labs, and provide departmental and faculty offices, lab support areas, and interaction areas for students and faculty.
Praecis Pharmaceuticals Will Relocate to Waltham
Praecis Pharmaceuticals, based in Cambridge, Mass., will relocate its headquarters and R&D lab operations to a new 175,000-sf structure in Waltham. The three-story shell was designed by Jung Brannen Associates of Boston; the contractor that built the shell was John Moriarty & Associates of Winchester. Praecis will use the same firms to complete the facility. Praecis will move into all but 32,000 sf of the facility in early 2001, subleasing the unoccupied space until needed.
USDA Consolidates Operations in Raleigh
U.S. Department of Agriculture has consolidated operations from 13 regional offices in six states at the new Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) Eastern Regional Hub at North Carolina State University's Centennial campus in Raleigh. The 35,000-sf hub, located in the Venture II building, accommodates Animal Care and Investigative and Enforcement Services; Plant Protection and Quarantine; Veterinary Services; and Wildlife Services. The current staff of 80 is expected to grow to 150 people by the end of 2000.
