University of Texas Proposes Sports Science Institute

The University of Texas Health Science Center (UTHSC) has proposed the construction of the University of Texas Sports Science Institute, a world-class, multi-disciplinary research center for sports science. In addition to UTHSC, the project would be sponsored by the University of Texas at Austin and the University of Texas at San Antonio. The San Antonio campus would emphasize education, research, medicine, and psychology as they relate to sports; and community wellness. The project is awaiting approval in May from the University of Texas Board of Regents.

Johns Hopkins Expands in Rockville

Johns Hopkins University, located in Baltimore, plans to expand its Shady Grove satellite campus in Rockville with a 130,000-sf building, the third at the 35-acre site. The facility is to house classrooms, administrative offices, and computer labs, as well as outside tenants who work or partner with the University. Spaulding & Slye Colliers was selected by the University to develop the new structure. Future expansion at the site will also be planned by the company.

Northrop Grumman Expands in Maryland

Northrop Grumman, based in Los Angeles, is expanding its operations in Maryland near the Baltimore/Washington International Airport. A new 100,000-sf facility will be built to consolidate its regional operations and to provide swing space while the company makes final expansion plans--possibly as much as 15,000 sf--for northern Rockville.

GSA Plans Southeast Federal Center Redevelopment

The General Services Administration is developing plans for the Southeast Federal Center, a 3 million-sf office, retail, residential and cultural complex. The GSA has issued a request for qualifications outlining criteria for selecting the development team for the project. The U.S. Department of Transportation became the anchor tenant when it decided in July to locate its 1.7 million-sf headquarters, which employs 7,000 workers, on 11 of the Center's 55 acres.

Redundant Networks Outfits Raleigh Data Center

Redundant Networks of Reno has selected the Keystone Office Park in Raleigh as the site of its East Coast data center. The Internet hosting and management start-up selected Raleigh because the city is located on a wide Internet pipeline. Fit-out of the 10,000-sf facility is slated for completion in April with operations to begin in May. Construction is also taking place on the company’s Reno headquarters.
