Georgia Aquarium to Open in 2005

The Georgia Aquarium has selected Heery International Inc. of Atlanta as construction manager for building the world's largest aquarium. Heery's role will be the oversight and management of all project stages. Slated to open in 2005, the $200-million, 250,000-sf aquarium will feature a 5 million-gallon exotic aquatic animal tank. Brasfield & Gorrie LLC of Kennesaw will manage day-to-day construction operations.

Huawei Technologies Builds Corporate Data and Command Center

The Huawei Technologies Corporate Data and Command Center, a 130,000-sf facility designed by RTKL’s Applied Technology Group in Baltimore, Md., is now under construction in Shenzhen, China.  Huawei is a leading supplier of telephone switching equipment in China. The ‘world class’ command center includes an executive briefing room overlooking a two-story, 50-seat command center station. The center supports an equipment load of 40w/sf in 20,000 sf of space, with expansion at the same load density up to 40,000 sf.

Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hosptial Expands

A new 143,000-sf addition to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital in Roanoke, Virginia, will expand the hospital's surgery and cardiovascular services while helping to organize existing floors more efficiently. The expansion to the facility's 10-story South Pavilion building will add a total of 126 beds to the hospital's critical care and progressive care units. Expected completion date for the project is fall 2003. Designed by HOK of St. Louis, the expansion's construction budget is $30,800,000.

DreamWorks Considers Redwood City Expansion

Glendale-based media/entertainment company DreamWorks SKG is planning to lease over 100,000 sf in Redwood City's Pacific Shores for PDI, the company's Palo Alto-based computer animation division. PDI currently occupies 65,000 sf in three buildings in Palo Alto and employs 300 people. The size of the Pacific Shores location would allow PDI to more than double its workforce. The company has been seeking a Bay Area expansion fit for two years.

Ford Considers Mebane Distribution Site

Ford Motor Co. is considering building a parts distribution center in Mebane, N.C.  Ford's preferred site is the North Carolina Industrial Center, a 550-acre Alamance County business park developed by Samet Corp. Ford plans to lease a minimum of 225,000 sf, which could expand up to 930,000 sf in the next two years. Ford dealerships within a 250-mile radius would be serviced by the distribution center, which could require from 50 to 70 acres of land. Cost of the project, which could include two buildings, is estimated as high as $35 million.
