UC Merced To Break Ground on Classroom and Office Building

The University of California Merced is working with contractor McCarthy to construct a 92,000-sf classroom and office building, one of the first three academic buildings scheduled to open in 2004. The first American research university to be built in the 21st century, the school is being built with the latest sustainable techniques to attain a campus-wide silver certification in LEED building standards through the U.S. Green Building Council. To achieve certification, the project will maximize the use of low-emitting and recycled materials and local/regional resources during construction.

St. John's Mercy Medical Center Expands in Creve Coeur

Work is progressing on schedule on a complex $25.5-million vertical expansion and seismic upgrade at St. John’s Mercy Medical Center in Creve Coeur, Miss. Designed by St. Louis-based Christner, the 2-story post-partum area expansion includes construction of 66 private patient rooms, nursery and support space on top of an existing 5-story structure. Construction is slated for completion in January 2004. The project contractor is McCarthy.

NAIA Develops Olathe Headquarters

The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics will develop its new $6-million headquarters on 6.4 acres in Cedar Creek Corporate Park in Olathe, Mo. The architect for the 35,000-sf facility is DLR Group of Overland Park, with Ambassador Construction of Olathe as general contractor.

Pfizer Designs Clinical Research Unit

Pfizer has selected The S/L/A/M Collaborative to design a new phase I clinical trials facility in New Haven, Conn. The 65,000-sf facility, slated for completion in 2004, will house phase I clinical trials space as well as research, office, laboratory and support facilities. The location of the three-story facility will foster collaboration with Yale Medical School, providing access to its imaging equipment for additional drug research on a cellular level.

Texas Instruments Plans Richardson Facility

Dallas-based Texas Instruments (TI) is planning to construct its next major semiconductor manufacturing plant in Richardson, Texas. TI will invest approximately $3 billion in the 300mm silicon wafer plant in the years following groundbreaking in late 2005. The plant will employ up to 1,000 people when fully operational. The siting of the plant in Texas will provide over $300-million in new funding from private and public sources for the Erik Jonsson School of Engineering and Computer Science at the University of Texas at Dallas.
