Intel Converts Chandler Plant to 300mm

Santa Clara-based Intel is engaged in a $2-billion conversion of Fab 12, its Chandler, Ariz., plant, from the production of 200mm wafers to 300mm wafers. Slated for completion in late 2005, the project includes the modification of the interior of the cleanroom to house the increased size of the 300mm production equipment. As the first entire conversion of an existing 200mm fab to a 300mm fab, the project provides space to double capacity. The larger wafers require 40 percent less energy and water for each chip produced, diminishing the overall use of resources.

University of Albany Creates College of Nanoscience

The University of Albany has created the College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering, the nation’s first college of nanoscience, in Albany, N.Y. Providing infrastructure and environment for attracting new nanotechnology research and development, the college will be housed in the same complex as the Albany Center of Excellence in Nanoelectronics located on the Albany Nanotech campus.

School for Creating and Performing Arts Plans K-12 Public Arts School

The School for Creating and Performing Arts (SCPA) and Schiel Primary School for Arts Enrichment are planning to build a combined home in Cincinnati that will be the nation’s first K-12 public arts school. The facility will accommodate 1,350 students with improved classrooms, specialized space for practice, display, and performance.

Methodist Health System Plans Mansfield Hospital

Methodist Health System of Dallas is planning to construct a $100-million general acute-care hospital in Mansfield, Texas. Housing emergency room services, surgical accommodations, and 80 private rooms, the facility will be constructed on more than one million sf and will complement Methodist’s planned imaging center and physician offices in Midlothian. Construction is expected to begin by November 2004; the hospital could become operational in 28 months to three years.

Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield Plans New Headquarters

Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield , based in Indianapolis, will consolidate most of their local operations with a planned 240,000-sf building in Louisville, Ky. Sited in the 700-acre Triton Office Park in the Eastpoint Business Center, the four-story building will house 1,200 Anthem employees, functioning as the insurer’s new local headquarters. Construction is slated to begin in June 2004 and reach completion in August 2005. The project team of the $24- to $30-million facility includes architect Tucker & Booker Inc. and project manager BMC Contractors.
