GE Healthcare Completes Wauwatosa Facility
GE Healthcare is nearing completion of its new four-story, 506,000-sf facility located in the Milwaukee County Research Park in Wauwatosa. Housing office space, 50,000 sf of ultrasound assembly operations, a 10,000 sf product display area, an 80-seat auditorium, light manufacturing, programming and engineering facilities, the $85-million building will also include a 1,500-car parking garage, a cafeteria, and a 5,000-sf fitness center.
Affymetrix Expands West Sacramento Operations
Affymetrix, a maker of DNA array chi, has initiated construction on a new 110,584-sf manufacturing plant in West Sacramento, Calif. Accommodating production lines for the company's next generation of high-resolution GeneChips, the facility will double Affymetrix's output by the second half of 2007. Affymetrix's existing West Sacramento facility is 52,000 sf. Additionally, Affymetrix has purchased a 100,000-sf former semiconductor factory in Singapore which it will convert for production.
Microsoft Expands Redmond Campus
Microsoft Corp. is planning to expand its Redmond, Wash., campus by one third. The company will invest $1-billion over the next three years to bring 3.1 million additional square feet on line by June of 2009. Microsoft plans to add fourteen new buildings to campus, seven of which will be new construction. The remaining seven buildings will be purchased. The new facilities will house an additional 12,000 employees.
UCSD Biomedical Library Expansion Nears Completion
The University of California, San Diego will complete the expansion and renovation of the $16-million Biomedical Library in La Jolla in spring of 2006. McCarthy Building Companies is serving as construction manager and general contractor for the project, which entails the addition of 39,000 sf to the existing library, as well as renovation of the attached structure. Built in 1969 to serve 800 users, the library will nearly double in size so that services can be provided to more than 4,000 students, faculty, and visitors.
UC Davis Constructs Veterinary Medical Facilities
The University of California, Davis is constructing two veterinary medical facilities, both slated for completion by year-end 2006. Designed by SRG Partnership of Portland, Ore., the $77-million Veterinary Medical Building 3A features office, teaching, and clinical laboratory space, a research tower, overhead cranes for large animal transport, and a necropsy room with a digester. The 164,000-sf facility is being built to meet strict biosafety sterilization code requirements and vibration criteria.
