Princeton University Plans New Chemistry Building

Princeton University has approved plans for a new 260,000-sf, four-story chemistry building and a connecting pedestrian bridge. Replacing existing chemistry facilities, the building will house teaching and research labs, department offices, lecture halls, and an auditorium. The project will be designed to be energy efficient with photovoltaic panels and advanced HVAC systems. Site work began in summer of 2007 with completion expected in fall of 2010.

Hurricane Research Centers Investigate Storm Resistant Construction Methods

Florida International University will open the International Hurricane Research Center in Miami in summer of 2008. The facility will consist of a steel warehouse large enough to contain a two-story house and a large wind and rain machine. Aimed at developing storm-proof building technologies, the facility will enable scientists to destroy houses within a controlled environment to study how construction methods and building materials perform in extreme storm conditions.

DOE Plans National Synchrotron Light Source II

The Department of Energy (DOE) is planning to construct the National Synchrotron Light Source-II (NSLS-II) at Brookhaven National Laboratory in Upton, N.Y. The DOE has granted the project Critical Decision 1 status, representing a significant step toward construction of the facility. Producing x-ray light 10,000 times brighter than the existing NSLS, the project will facilitate discoveries in advanced materials, energy technologies, nanoscience, and pharmaceutical development. The project budget is estimated at $750 to $925 million.

Siemens Institute for Advanced Medicine Constructs Winnipeg Facility

Siemens Institute for Advanced Medicine is constructing a $150 million facility at the Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg. The project received $13.5 million in funding from the Canadian federal government in summer of 2007, for a total federal investment to date of $26.5 million. The 100,000-sf facility will house a neuroscience research department, surgery facilities, and R&D space for testing for advanced operating tools and technologies.

Kent State University Breaks Ground on Health and Science Facility

Kent State University broke ground on the two-story, 56,000-sf Health and Science Building in Ashtabula, Ohio, in July of 2007. The $15 million facility will accommodate nursing and healthcare education in a technology-rich environment to support leading edge biomedical training. Completion is expected in January of 2009.
