University of Toronto Scarborough Breaks Ground on Interdisciplinary Science Facility
The University of Toronto Scarborough broke ground on a new interdisciplinary science building on March 28, 2006. Designed by Moriyama & Teshima Architects in association with Watson MacEwen Architects, the facility will provide space for dynamic collaboration in research and teaching in the environmental, physical, and life sciences.
Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory Opens Molecular Foundry
Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory dedicated the $85 million Molecular Foundry in Berkeley, Calif. on March 24, 2006. Construction began on the six-story, 95,000-sf nanotechnology center in December of 2003. Designed by the architectural firm SmithGroup, the facility is one of five U.S. Department of Energy nanotechnology research centers.
Motorola Opens Hangzhou R&D Facility
Motorola has opened a new research and development center in the Binjiang district of the Hi-tech Industry Development Zone in Hangzhou, China. The facility will develop, test, and launch software and hardware for integration in consumer products.
University of New Mexico Plans Centennial Engineering Center
The University of New Mexico will break ground in 2006 on the 144,000-sf Centennial Engineering Center in Albuquerque. Entailing the demolition of Wagner Hall and Tapy Hall, the facility will house Civil, Chemical and Nuclear Engineering, the Computer Science Department, Engineering Student Programs, Minority Student Programs, and the School of Engineering administrative offices.
Pfizer Develops Chesterfield and Ann Arbor Campuses
Pfizer has selected Gilbane Building Company in a joint venture with Tarlton Corporation as the Construction Manager for Pfizer's new research facility in Chesterfield, Mo. The four-story, 330,000-sf facility is part of a nearly $200-million expansion of Pfizer's existing four-building site. Gilbane's Chicago office and Tarlton's St. Louis office will oversee the project with the design team of Kling Architects.
