Ohio University Breaks Ground on Academic & Research Center
Ohio University broke ground on in January of 2008 on the Academic & Research Center in Athens. The $30 million classroom and laboratory building will house the Russ College of Engineering and Technology and the College of Osteopathic Medicine in a collaborative facility featuring 12 medical and six integrated research labs, flexible classrooms, project rooms, and an engineering hangar. Designed by Columbus-based engineering and architectural firm Burgess & Niple, the ARC is slated to open in fall of 2009.
LEED AP Credentials To Be Administrated by GBCI
As of January of 2008, the LEED AP credential will be administered by a separately incorporated organization, the Green Building Certification Institute (GBCI). The formation of GBCI creates administrative independence between the LEED Rating Systems and the LEED AP credential—an important requirement in seeking accreditation for professional credentialing programs by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI).
UC Riverside Breaks Ground on Materials Science and Engineering Building
The University of California, Riverside broke ground on its new Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) Building on January 10, 2008. The $53-million project will be the first facility at UCR devoted to nanotechnology research and is slated for completion in 2010. The 77,000-asf project will accommodate interdisciplinary instruction and research in nanotechnology, materials science, and bioengineering. The facility will house joint programs for the Bourns College of Engineering and the College of Natural and Agricultural Sciences.
Stanford Medical Center Selects Architects for Palo Alto Expansion
Stanford Medical Center, comprised of Stanford Hospital & Clinics and Lucile Packard Children's Hospital, has named architects for the estimated $2 billion seismic upgrade and expansion project in Palo Alto, Calif. Lead architect Rafael Viñoly of New York will work with Burkhart, Liu Inc. of Marina del Rey on the Stanford Hospital project comprising 1.4 million-sf in new construction and including a 600-bed inpatient hospital.
Garvan Institute for Medical Research Constructs Mouse Facility
The Garvan Institute of Medical Research is constructing a mouse breeding facility in Moss Vale, New South Wales, Australia. The first phase is slated for occupancy in 2008. Owned by the Garvan Institute and operated by Australian BioResources, the facility will supply mice to the University of New South Wales, the Prince of Wales Medical Research Institute, the University of Newcastle, and the Children's Cancer Institute of Australia.
