World Health Report 2007 Details Increasing Spread of Infectious Diseases
The World Health Organization's 2007 report states that infectious diseases are emerging more rapidly and spreading more quickly due to increased human mobility and travel. As the increasing risk of disease outbreaks and epidemics escalates, these health emergencies can become threats to global public health security. The World Health Report 2007 examines contemporary infectious disease trends and examines the revised International Health Regulations (2005), which came into force in 2007, as a tool for health risk identification and management.
University of Rochester Constructs Cancer Center
The University of Rochester is constructing a $42.5 million facility for the James P. Wilmot Cancer Center at the University of Rochester Medical Center. The 163,000-sf, four-story building doubles existing space for clinical and translational research and includes a three-story glass atrium. Ground was broken on the project in May of 2006 and completion is slated for spring of 2008.
City of Walnut Creek Constructs LEED Certified Library
The City of Walnut Creek, Calif., has selected Gilbane Building Company to serve as CM Agent for the city's new $43.5 million library and parking garage. This 42,000 sf, two-story building is located in roughly the same location as the current downtown library built in 1961. Due to the current library being outdated and undersized, this project is intended to provide the needed space for books and materials, as well as the construction of an underground parking lot with approximately 150 spaces for public parking.
Green Buildings Reap Insurance Benefits
Sustainably designed buildings may be eligible for discounted property casualty insurance polices. LEED certified facilities are being offered five percent policy discounts by Novato, Calif.-based Fireman’s Fund due to the increased safety of such buildings. Other insurance products available through Fireman’s Fund for green buildings include a green commissioning service that pays for an engineer to ascertain that the building systems are functioning optimally.
University of Alaska Anchorage Constructs Integrated Science Building
The University of Alaska is building the $67 million Integrated Science Building in Anchorage. Designed by ZGF Architects of Seattle and ECI/Hyer Inc., the three-story facility will be comprised of 128,000 sf plus 10,000 sf of mechanical penthouses. The project contractor is Cornerstone Construction Co. Housing teaching and research labs, offices, a vivarium, a planetarium, a large atrium, and a 445-car parking garage, the building will accommodate chemistry, biology, geology, engineering, and nursing.
