West Virginia University Opens College of Engineering Addition
West Virginia University officially opened a $12 million addition to the College of Engineering and Mineral Resources in Morgantown in October of 2008. The four-story facility houses biomedical engineering labs, group study rooms, offices, a 120-seat classroom, and the Research Center for Alternative Fuels and Engine Emissions.
BD Biosciences Builds AF2 cGMP Facility
BD Biosciences is building the AF2 (Animal-Free/Antibiotic-Free) bioprocess manufacturing facility in Miami. The 90,000-sf cGMP production plant is expected to open in October of 2009 and will manufacture products monitored for animal-origin component raw materials to the tertiary level. The project will include cell culture operations and large-scale liquid filling equipment, supporting the needs of bioprocess companies working with mammalian, microbial, or stem cell lines.
Colorado State University Opens Center for the Arts
Colorado State University celebrated the completion of the $45 million University Center for the Arts in Fort Collins in October of 2008.
Woodstock General Breaks Ground on New Hospital
Woodstock General Hospital broke ground on its new 350,000-sf facility in fall of 2008. Located in Woodstock, ON, Canada, the three-story, 178-bed hospital will feature advanced diagnostic imaging, five surgical suites, a critical care unit, and a women’s and children’s center. The hospital will provide acute inpatient care, ambulatory services, rehabilitation, and continuing care. The facility will be built, financed, and maintained over a 30-year period by Integrated Team Solutions. The general contractor is EllisDon.
Department of Homeland Security Dedicates NBACC
The Department of Homeland Security dedicated the $143 million National Biodefense Analysis and Countermeasures Center at Fort Detrick in Frederick, Md., in October of 2008. The 160,000-sf facility will be operated by Battelle National Biodefense Institute. Housing 40,000-sf of BSL-3 research space and 10,000-sf of BSL-4 space, the facility will accommodate 140 scientists when it opens in March of 2009. Construction began on the project in June of 2006.
